Beliau mengawali wudhunya dengan berkumur <em>(madhmadhoh), <\/em>lalu dilanjutkan menghirup air melalui hidung <em>(istinsyaq)<\/em>, membasuh wajah sebanyak tiga kali dan ditutup dengan membasuh kedua kaki. Setelah melakukan runtutan wudhu tersebut, tiba-tiba beliau tertawa tanpa sebab. Para sahabat yang menyaksikannya pun merasa dengan kejadian ini.<\/p>\n<p>Lantas sahabat Utsman bertanya kepada para sahabatnya: \u201c<em>Tidaklah kalian bertanya kepadaku perihal kenapa aku tertawa ?\u201d<\/em> .<\/p>\n<p>Mendengar ucapan Utsman, sontak para sahabat bertanya: <em>\u201cWahai Amirul Mukminin!, Kenapa engkau tiba-tiba tertawa ?\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dengan santainya Ustman ibn Affan menjawab: <em>\u201cDahulu aku pernah melihat Rasulullah shallallahu \u2018alaihi wassalam meminta air di tempat ini juga, yang digunakan untuk berwudhu, kemudian beliau berwudhu sebagai mana yang aku kerjakan tadi. Setelah selesai, beliau tiba-tiba tertawa lalu bertanya kepada kami, \u201cAla tas\u2019aluni ma adh-hakaka (tidaklah kalian bertanya kepadaku tentang apa yang membuatku tertawa?\u201d. <\/em>Maka kami yang dibuatnya heran bertanya <em>\u201cYa Rasulullah! Apa yang menyebabkan engkau tertawa ?<\/em>\u201d. Beliau dengan raut wajah tersenyum menjelaskan: <em>\u201cInna al-\u2018abda idza da\u2019a bi wudhuin fa ghosala wajhahu haththo\u00a0 Allahu \u2018anhu kulla khothiatin ashobaha bi thohharo qodamaihi kana kadzalika (aku tertawa karena seorang hamba jika berwudhu, lalu membasuh wajahnya, maka Allah akan menghapus segala kesalahannya yang berada di wajah, ketika membasuh kedua tangannya, Allah akan menghapus segala kesalahannya yang ada di tangan, begitu juga jika mengusap kepalanya sampai kepada membasuh kedua kakinya, Allah akan menghapus segala kesalahannya yang berada di anggota badan (bekas basuhan air wudhu)\u201d<\/em>, cerita Utsman kepada para sahabatnya. Yang akhirnya mereka mengetahui jika tertawanya Utsman setelah berwudhu, karena meniru Rasulullah SAW.
